The Adventures of a University of Alberta BScN student in Africa
Reading Week Tales
I sit on a damp rock at the edge of a hill overlooking the valley in which stands a large watering hole amidst trickling creeks of water. Warthogs and water bucks graze in the grasslands and bogs down below. The trees drip droplets of water from a recent rain. The horizon is spotted with rain clouds misting over the trees and as the sun peeks out from behind a lingering cloud, my heart rejoices. I am in Africa.
The trip up to the northern region of Ghana with 5 other very good friends was a much-needed retreat. It was a beautiful time of basking in the clean, jungle air and enjoying each other’s company. In photos, you will likely see me with a wide grin as I thrill at the opportunity to see animals in their natural environment, ride on top of a Jeep (and perpetually muttering for the driver to “gun it” through the mud and puddles! 😁), and listen to the sounds of birds and insects of the forest. I will let the following pictures do the rest of the talking.
No caption. The best Brownie Club ever. Had I a friend with a tuk tuk, I would have him “took” me everywhere I go. Oh. My. Trotro. Faces not entirely indicative of feelings post-ride. She’s the leaves to my tree. Do you see what I see?! I’m pretty sure everyone was thankful I wasn’t behind the wheel. Young kob.You can’t underestimate how good it feels to get scratched. 🤣 Crazy baboons. Warthogs. Water bucks. I just love her. She’s makes every photo beautiful. It’s hard to describe how much fun I had splashing through the wet forest floor. Emotion not pictured. Volta Region from the sky at sunset.
We returned to Accra on the 22nd, and enjoyed the rest of the week sleeping, bargaining prices in markets, and well, I did a crazy thing and decided to see if I could drown in the sea.
I didn’t drown, thanks to an unsinkable foam board and fantastic surf trainers and lifeguard friends.
All that to say that it was a very special time of satisfying my desire to rest and explore, while giving me the energy and motivation to go into the last 5 weeks of clinical at 37 Military Hospital. Wow! Time is flying by way too fast!
A single, thirty-something, registered nurse-ish, lover of the abundant life we can have in Jesus Christ. I am passionate about joyful singleness, Godly marriages, loving families, and things relating to adoption and working with kiddos.
When I am not working at the local hospital, you may find me enjoying walks, going for spontaneous truck drives and getting lost, eating chocolate and probably lots of it, jotting down random thoughts from my brain, marveling at little details in God's world, chatting philosophically with my way-smarter siblings or sharing deep spiritual conversations with them, laughing at random things people (or animals) do, or just plain enjoying homemaking in my little home (and probably dreaming about my future farm).
